Hypnosis to Rev Your Metabolism!

Hypnosis to Rev Your Metabolism

www.doctoroz.com

In my own hypnosis practice, I work with a lot of people to help them loose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  In particular, I specialize in helping people who need to loose weight for major medical reasons, such as those who have diabetes type 2 or who have had bariatric weight loss surgery.

British hypnotist Paul McKenna has been a guest on the Dr. Oz Show a couple times now, talking about how hypnosis can be used to boost your metabolism, control cravings, and keep the weight off.  If you have not already seen these episodes, you can find them on the Dr. Oz Show website.

Smokers Who Successfully Quit Are Happier!

Smokers Who Quit Are Happier, Study Finds

health.usnews.com

“Smokers might believe that quitting will decrease life satisfaction or quality of life — because they believe it disrupts routines, interferes with relationships, leads to a loss of smoking-related pleasure, or because cessation deprives them of a coping strategy,” says researcher Megan Piper, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and its Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention.

But contrary to their concerns, the study found that those who did successfully quit experienced greater satisfaction with the quality of their life, both in regards to health as well as their emotions, both one year and three years after cessation, compared with those who continued to smoke.

The study was published online by the Society of Behavioral Medicine in the December 2011 issue of the Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Smoking During Pregnancy May Damage Children’s Blood Vessels

www.webmd.com

Dutch scientists have conducted research that suggests smoking during pregnancy has long-term effects on the thickness and flexibility of their child’s carotid arteries, large blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain.

Cuno Uiterwaal, an associate professor of clinical epidemiology at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care at the University Medical Center Utrecht, Netherlands, says, “with our findings, we think that smoking in pregnancy does play an independent role, although we know that exposure of children to [secondhand] smoke is damaging in many areas.”

“The challenge there was to show that it was really smoking in pregnancy and not exposure to cigarette smoke afterward,” says researcher Uiterwaal. “To further explore that, we did this study.”

Harvard School of Public Health: Nicotine Replacement Therapies Not Effective

Nicotine replacement therapies may not be effective in helping people quit smoking

www.hsph.harvard.edu

Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs) have been available as over-the-counter smoking cessation medications since 1996.  However, a recent study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health shows that people who used an NRT to quit smoking – like the nicotine patch (placed on the skin), nicotine gum, nicotine inhaler, or nasal spray – are just as likely to relapse as those who quit cold turkey.

“This study shows that using NRT is no more effective in helping people stop smoking cigarettes in the long-term than trying to quit on one’s own,” said Hillel Alpert, a research scientist at HSPH.

In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show that in the past five years, the adult smoking quitting rates have remained the same (rather than improved as one would expect given the popularity of NRT use).

Lois Biener of the University of Massachusetts Boston’s Center for Survey Research said that “using public funds to provide NRT to the population at large is of questionable value, particularly when it reduces the amount of money available for smoking interventions shown in previous studies to be effective.”

HypnoBirthing for an Easier Childbirth

HypnoBirthing takes the hard-labour out of Childbirth

www.thebirthingsite.com

Here is an excellent article about HypnoBirthing written by a fellow practitioner over in the UK.  Please have a read!

Jacqueline Grimsley writes: “MENTION labour and delivery to an expectant mum and the chances are her heart will begin to race at the thought of what’s to come. But HypnoBirthing helps mums-to-be overcome their fear and tension with a different way of birthing … HypnoBirthing enables mums to eliminate the ‘fear-tension-pain’ syndrome, resulting in a comfortable, relaxed birthing experience whilst being in complete control.”

Rehabiliation Expert Urges Doctors to Consider Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management

Hypnosis to tackle problems of chronic pain: International expert

www.news-medical.net

Presenting at the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, Annual Scientific Meeting in Brisbane, visiting rehabilitation expert Professor Mark Jensen, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington, urged healthcare professionals to consider Hypnotic Therapy as a ‘mainstream’ treatment option in the management of chronic pain, and to discuss this option with their patients.

“Pain management for patients, particularly those with long-term illness or injury requires a considered and holistic approach,” Professor Jensen said. “Imaging studies have shown that Hypnotic Therapy influences all of the cortical areas and neuro-physiological process that underline pain. Helping patients manage pain can have a significant psychological impact. What people do to manage pain and what they think about pain, and their social environment, can all influence pain and its negative impact on functioning.”

Imagination Stimulates the Brain to Help You Heal Faster from Injury

The healing power of imagination

www.theaustralian.com.au

Doctors working with burn patients at Adelaide’s Neuro Orthopaedic Institute (NOI) use images of moving body parts and a mirror box to stimulate certain parts of the brain. An injured hand is placed in a box out of sight behind a mirror, and the healthy hand is moved and reflected in the mirror.

“The brain thinks both [hands] are moving and it changes the swelling and the healing [in the injured hand],” says Fiona Wood, a British born plastic surgeon, director of the Royal Perth Hospital’s burns unit.

She wants to take the technique a step further, using an avatar of the person on a computer, to see if giving a patient’s brain the image of their working, undamaged body parts will speed up the healing process.

“I sort of fancifully say we can think ourselves whole. We need to understand how visualization impacts healing.”

Visual Cues Are Critical to Controlling How Much We Eat

Mindless Eating

www.sciencedaily.com

What do you do while you are eating your breakfast, lunch or dinner?  If you are like many Americans, in our fast-paced culture, then you are probably busy multi-tasking during many of your meals.  It is so common for folks to be watching TV, on their phone, working on the computer, or something else while munching away on snacks or a meal.  And it is true that many who do this also routinely overeat and have trouble loosing weight.

“The human stomach isn’t designed to keep accurate track of how much we have eaten. In fact, it takes about 20 minutes after we eat before our stomachs register that we are ‘full.’ Visual cues are critical to controlling our much we eat,” according to Brian Wansink, a food psychologist at Cornell University.

He goes on to explain how plate size makes a difference as does minimizing distractions and paying attention to what you are putting into your mouth while you are eating.
